Why EcoSnug Chose Natural Fibres Over Stay-Dry Fabrics ?

When I started cloth diapering, I knew very little about fabrics.

Like many new parents, I simply wanted to do something better for my baby. I just had an inclination towards sustainability so I also wanted to be good to the environment to the extent possible. My plan wasn’t even to cloth diaper full-time. I bought a pack of disposable diapers for travel and emergencies, assuming I would use both.

Ironically, I never even finished that first pack!

Everything was going well until my modern cloth diapers started developing a stubborn stink. While trying to solve that problem, my sister, who has a background in textiles, helped me identify the “stay-dry” layer inside most of my diapers—it was microfleece, a synthetic fabric.

That discovery led me down a rabbit hole.

Do you know what you wear ? I did not.

While reading educational resources from Green Mountain Diapers and listening to ClothDiapersforBeginners on YouTube, I learnt that these stay-dry fabrics—microfleece, suedecloth and athletic wicking jersey—are all synthetic, petroleum-derived materials. With every WASH, these fabrics release microplastics into our rivers and oceans, eventually finding their way back into our food. And with every WEAR, these synthetic fibres can also shed microfibres that is directly against your baby’s delicate skin for hours at a time.

I had switched away from disposable diapers, only to realise I was still putting plastic against my baby’s bottom every single day. The more I learnt, the harder it became to ignore.

Solution or Another Problem ?

Moreover, stay-dry fabrics don’t distinguish between urine and your baby’s natural skin moisture. They wick away both, which can leave skin over-dried. Parents are then often advised to use diaper creams, many of which are not cloth-diaper friendly and create another set of challenges.

The solution had quietly become another problem.

When I searched for alternatives in India, I discovered that almost every modern cloth diaper relied on synthetic stay-dry layers. Even brands often believed they were essential. Flats were available, but they were almost always recommended with a fleece liner.

An alternative exists !

Then I discovered Green Mountain Diapers in the US.

For the first time, I saw a completely different philosophy—muslin flats, cotton prefolds, fitted diapers and unbleached cotton products that worked beautifully without synthetic layers. I ended up importing diapers from a country thousands of kilometres away, despite living in the land where cotton first flourished.

That experience became the foundation of EcoSnug. We consciously chose not to use stay-dry fabrics. Does that make our products harder to sell? Absolutely.

Many parents have become accustomed to the idea that “dry feel” is essential. But we believe what touches a baby’s skin should be as natural as possible.

Parents carefully choose muslin swaddles, organic cotton clothing and wholesome food. Yet when it comes to the fabric closest to a baby’s skin for hours every day, synthetic materials have quietly become the norm.

We think it’s time to question that.

EcoSnug exists because we believe babies deserve thoughtfully made diapers using natural fibres that are minimally processed, gentle on skin and kinder to the environment.

Sometimes doing the right thing isn’t the easiest path—but it’s the one worth taking.
